INTRODUCTION OF PENDRIVE OR USB FLASH DRIVE

The storage space in computers are divided in a similar way to prevent the loss of data when the computer is asleep i.e. switched off. RAM or Random Access Memory is the equivalent of our brain’s short-term memory and the ROM or Read Only Memory is the equivalent of long-term memory.

DIGITAL LANGUAGE

Now computers and brains process information in very different ways. We use words whereas digital information is in the form of a binary code, where a series of 1s and 0s are used to represent words. Let’s look at the word ‘hello!’ as an example.

WHAT IS FLASH MEMORY?

So what do all these 1s and 0s have to do with your pen-drive? Well, think of the letter ‘h’ as a set of 8 switches. Each of these microscopic switches are called transistors. It takes one transistor to store one BInary digiT (BIT) – h. Each character is made up of 8 binary digits that make up 1 Byte. Therefore hello! = 6 bytes. Now, a zero in binary code, means that the transistor is turned off and a one, means that the transistor is turned on. Therefore a 1 will allow electricity to pass through it and a 0 will not.

The transistor in your pen-drive has the following structure :-

Think of your transistor as a gate that either allows or prevents electricity from passing through it. It has a source where electricity enters the transistor and a drain where electricity can leave. When the gate is opened, electricity can pass through it and it is read as a 1 and when the gate is closed, no electricity can pass through and it is considered a 0. The picture above shows a transistor in the off position.

Both the source and the drain regions are rich in electrons while the section marked p does not. If we apply a positive charge to the bitline and the wordline, electrons get pulled from the source to these regions, creating a tunnel where electricity can pass through. This is essentially like opening the gate. The presence of electrons in this tunnel tells the computer that the gates are open and it reads it as a 1.

Pen-drives are a part of a larger group of devices known as Flash Drives. A computer uses different types of memory to process different types of data. Remember RAM and ROM? It will store the things it needs to remember all the time in the ROM but when it only needs to remember something temporarily, it will use the RAM. Your pen-drive is a form of ROM that you can carry around and connect to different computers, unlike the hard-drive of your desktop.

When the technology was developed in the early 2000s, external storage space such as floppy discs and cds could only carry up to 750 MB. Now, with the advancements in technology and research into new materials some pen drives can store 256 GB, which is the same amount of information as the hard drive of a laptop! And now with the development of wireless technology we may not even need pen-drives, if all your information can be stored in one place and accessed through satellites- imagine that!

Thanks to internet and email, sending a message to someone is no longer a laborious task. There are just two parties involved

1. The sender, and 
2. The recipient. 

Although sending an email seems like a simple task that’s only involves two parties, as with all internet transactions, there is always more going on than meets the eye. Let’s take a look at the behind the scenes action that goes into delivering your email to your intended recipient.

There are multiple stages to delivering an email. These stages are called hops, and they are bound by rules, called protocols, to ensure that mail is sent and received correctly.

There are 3 types of protocols that govern email :

• SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol, that governs outgoing mail.

• POP3 - Post Office Protocol, that governs incoming mail to keep a set of messages on a server that email software (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) can access, to download the email to computer. Once downloaded to the computer, the message is deleted from the server.

• IMAP - Internet Mail Access Protocol, more sophisticated set of rules to govern incoming email. Allows messages to remain on the server, so email can be access from multiple devices. The messages aren’t deleted, and remain on the server, you can access them at any time.

THE EMAIL ADDRESS

Like a physical letter needs a postal address for it to be delivered, an email requires an email address. An email address (id) is usually in the following format yourname@emailserviceprovider.com.

There are TWO parts to an email id, separated by the “@” symbol

1. Yourname – The name / alias of the user
2. Emailserviceprovider.com – The domain name of the email service provider, such as gmail, yahoo, Hotmail etc.

The SMTP of the service provider uses a service called DNS (Domain Name System) to find the domain of the intended recipient, and uses this information to send them the email.

HOW DOES EMAIL DELIVERY WORK?

The process of delivering an email is by far one of the simpler internet transactions

1. You write up an email, sign it off and click send.

2. Your email is first sent to your email service provider.

3. Your email service provider gets the destination address using a DNS.

4. Your email service provider sends the email to your recipient’s email service provider

5. The recipient’s email service provider sends the email to the recipient’s inbox.

Thus, an email does have some similarities to snail mail when we consider the process involved. The differences being, of course, the time taken, and the fact that the actions require no physical labour.

DisplayPort is a digital display interface developed by a consortium of PC and chip manufacturers and standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). The interface is primarily used to connect a video source to a display device such as a computer monitor, and it can also carry audio, USB, and other forms of data.

SIMPLE INFO ABOUT DISPLAY PORT

DisplayPort delivers more high-performance features than any other digital interface. Designed to replace older standards like DVI and VGA, DisplayPort opens up new possibilities in computing, digital displays and consumer electronics. It’s the future standard and it’s available today.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE DISPLAY PORT STANDARD?

• DisplayPort 1.4 was published in March, 2016 and defines the new normative requirement and informative guideline for component and system design.  
• Most DisplayPort products currently available in the market today were built to the previous version, DisplayPort v1.2a. 
• Testing that is performed for DisplayPort device certification is also still based on the DisplayPort v1.2a Standard (devices must be certified to use the DisplayPort logo). 
• Products built to DisplayPort 1.4, as well as compliance testing based on DisplayPort 1.4, should become available in 2017.

WHICH TYPES OF PRODUCTS INCLUDE DISPLAY PORT?

Now available on a wide range of tablets, notebooks, and desktop computers as well as monitors. It is now also becoming available on digital televisions, including some 4K TVs, as a display input.

WHAT ARE SEVERAL ADVANTAGE OF DISPLAY PORT?

DisplayPort offers several advantages over the older standards. Notable examples include the following.

• It is an open, royalty-free standard.
• Its extensibility should encourage widespread adoption.
• It offers a video data transfer rate of up to 17.28 Gbps (17.28 billion bits per second).
• Multiple video streams can be transmitted over a single connection.
• Flexible bandwidth allocation allows for any desired division of resources between audio and video.
• It is adaptable to long-distance transmission over fiber optic cables.
• It can support communication between chips and circuits within a single device.
• It can drive displays directly, eliminating the need for auxiliary control hardware.

HOW IS DISPLAY PORT DIFFERENT FROM HDMI? AREN'T THEY VERY SIMILAR?

Both are different technically, and each began with a different product focus. 

• HDMI has been the de-facto connection for home entertainment systems and is used widely on HDTVs as an AV interface. 
• Some PCs and monitors include HDMI to enable connectivity with HDTVs and other consumer electronics gear. 
• DisplayPort, a newer standard originally developed to support the higher performance requirements of personal computers, is based on updated signal and protocol technology similar to that already used in today’s computer systems, enabling an increase in performance and integration. 
• Because DisplayPort uses common signaling technology in use for data communications and a packetized data structure, through a common connector, it can be combined with standards such as USB and Thunderbolt. 
• With link training/link quality monitoring as in data communications, DisplayPort provides a more robust and stable AV link.

Yes, DisplayPort supports multi-channel audio and many advanced audio features. DisplayPort to HDMI adapters also include the ability to support HDMI audio.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES IN DISPLAY PORT?

• Because of its high data rate, DisplayPort 1.2a systems today can support 4K displays at 60Hz refresh and full 30-bit 4:4:4 color (non-chroma subsampled). 
• DisplayPort 1.4 systems will support 5K displays (5120 x 2880) at 60Hz refresh, and for 4K displays will enable deeper color and higher refresh rates. 
• When enabled with DisplayPort’s Multi-Stream feature, several monitors can be connected to a single output on a video source device (such as a laptop or computer), using a daisy-chain or hub configuration.
